Outervention Costa Rica

out·er·ven·tion: [n] the act of escaping to the outdoors to find balance and extinguish burnout.

Needing an intervention but… outside? Backcountry took a crew on an Outervention of a lifetime, traveling through the jungles of Costa Rica, the glacial valleys of Iceland, and the mountain bike trails of Cascadia in the PNW.

For the first video of Outervention, we took a crew of regular customers and gearheads to surf and explore Costa Rica. I wanted to capture the humanity of the people we took on the trip, and to help our customers see their life in the people on the screen. I wanted to capture the feeling of burnout, the hustle and grind, and the moment you realize you’ve been surviving but not thriving.

For Lexi, her work is meaningful, which makes it difficult to define when she’s working too hard and when she needs to refill her cup. So we invited her to Costa Rica to reconnect with her surfing roots, immerse herself in the jungle and truly unwind. During the interview process, I explored her connection to surfing, the experience of having to learn how to balance work and living, and all the ways connecting to nature helps her thrive.

I led copy direction and narrative development for this campaign that spanned seven long-form videos, landing page, social, email, blogs, and a catalog. I led the interview process for each video, teasing out the documentary through-line and bringing it to life.

Has your 9-5 become 24/7?

The hustle and grind have never been heavier — endless notifications, bad news spirals, and never being able to “turn off.” Watch Lexi’s journey below as she discovers the key to living in balance while exploring the jungle and waves of Costa Rica.
